Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 3M 60926 cartridge a good choice if I need protection against both gases/vapors and particulates in one filter?
Yes. The 3M 60926 is a combination Multi Gas/Vapor Cartridge with a permanently attached P100 particulate filter, so a single unit protects against a broad mix of gases/vapors and 99.97% of airborne particulates (oil and non-oil). It is NIOSH approved against certain organic vapors, chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide, chlorine dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, methylamine, formaldehyde and hydrogen fluoride, plus particulates. Because one cartridge covers many contaminants, it reduces the number of different filters a facility has to stock. It is not for use in IDLH (immediately dangerous to life or health) atmospheres.
What contaminants does the 3M 60926 Multi Gas/Vapor P100 cartridge protect against?
The 3M 60926 is NIOSH approved for protection against certain organic vapors, chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide, chlorine dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, methylamine, formaldehyde and hydrogen fluoride, plus a P100 particulate filter that captures 99.97% of oil-based and non-oil-based particles (including dusts, mists and fumes). Its NIOSH color code is Magenta/Olive. Always match the cartridge to your specific hazard using a change-out schedule; it is not for IDLH environments.
What does the P100 rating on the 3M 60926 filter mean?
P100 is the highest NIOSH particulate filter class: it removes at least 99.97% of airborne particles and the "P" means it is oil-proof (resistant to oil-based aerosols). On the 3M 60926, the P100 filter is permanently attached to the gas/vapor cartridge, so you get maximum particulate efficiency against dusts, mists, fumes, asbestos, silica and mold together with gas/vapor adsorption in one combination unit.
Which 3M respirators are compatible with the 60926 cartridge?
The 3M 60926 uses a bayonet-style connection and fits 3M Bayonet reusable respirators, including the 3M Half Facepiece 6000 Series, 6500/6500QL Rugged Comfort Series and 7500 Series, the Full Facepiece 6000 Series and FF-400 Series, the 7800 Series, and the 3M Scott AV-3000 HT and AV-3000 SureSeal facepieces (with the AV-632 bayonet adapter). Installation is a simple quarter-turn twist to lock. Cartridges are used in pairs (one on each side of the facepiece).
How much protection does the 3M 60926 give — what assigned protection factor can I use it up to?
The 3M 60926 is NIOSH approved to help protect against certain gas/vapor concentrations up to 10 times the OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) when used on a half facepiece, and up to 50 times the PEL on a quantitatively fit-tested full facepiece. It must not be used in atmospheres that are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH), oxygen-deficient, or above these concentrations. Change the cartridge per your documented change-out schedule, or sooner if you detect smell, taste or irritation.
How do you know when to change the 3M 60926 cartridge?
Replace the 3M 60926 according to your worksite's documented change-out schedule, or immediately if you smell, taste, or feel irritation from the contaminant while wearing it — that indicates the gas/vapor bed is reaching capacity. 3M offers free Select and Service Life Software (3M.com/sls, covering 700+ chemicals) to help establish change-out schedules. The P100 particulate portion should also be replaced if breathing becomes difficult or the filter is damaged or soiled.
What is the difference between the 3M 60926 and an organic-vapor-only cartridge?
The 3M 60926 is a multi gas/vapor combination cartridge with a built-in P100 filter, whereas an organic-vapor-only cartridge (or an OV cartridge without a particulate filter) covers a narrower range. The 60926 adds acid gases and specific gases — chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide, chlorine dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, methylamine, formaldehyde and hydrogen fluoride — plus 99.97% particulate filtration in one unit. Choosing it can reduce inventory because one cartridge handles many different applications; if you only face organic vapors, a simpler OV cartridge may suffice.
Can the 3M 60926 cartridge be used for welding, painting, or chemical processing?
Yes, within its NIOSH-approved limits. 3M lists the 60926 for applications such as spray painting and paint preparation, welding and torch cutting, grinding, remediation, pesticide application, powder/spray coating, and parts cleaning, across industries like construction, general manufacturing, oil & gas, mining, pharmaceutical and food safety. Because it combines gas/vapor and P100 particulate protection, it suits jobs that generate both vapors and particles. Always confirm the specific contaminant and concentration are within the cartridge's approval and below IDLH levels.
Is the 3M 60926 sold individually or in pairs, and where can I buy it?
The 3M 60926 is available at Industrial Safety Products (industrialsafetyproducts.com) and is sold by the pair or by the case — respirator cartridges are used two at a time (one per side of the facepiece). Bulk quantities are offered for larger orders. Because the P100 filter is permanently attached to the cartridge, you replace the whole combination unit as one part.
Is the 3M 60926 comfortable and easy to install on the respirator?
Yes. The 3M 60926 has a low-profile, swept-back design that enhances field of view and balance on the facepiece, and it is lightweight with low breathing resistance. Installation is a quick quarter-turn twist to lock the bayonet connection into place. 3M engineers the carbon bed depth, cartridge geometry and particle size to balance easy breathing with long service life.
Is the 3M 60926 safe to use in any environment, including confined spaces or oxygen-deficient areas?
No. Like all air-purifying cartridges, the 3M 60926 must not be used in atmospheres that are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH), oxygen-deficient (below 19.5%), unknown, or where contaminant concentrations exceed its NIOSH-approved limits (10× PEL on a half mask, 50× PEL on a fit-tested full mask). It is an air-purifying filter, not a supplied-air system — it cleans existing breathable air, it does not supply oxygen. It is intended for industrial/occupational use only.
