3M 8511 Particulate Respirator, N95 (80 Ea/Case)

3M™ Particulate Respirator 8511, N95, is a disposable respirator that is designed to help provide reliable respiratory protection of at least 95 percent filtration efficiency against certain non oil-based particles. The respirator incorporates 3M's proprietary technology with an advanced electrostatically charged microfiber filter designed for ease of breathing.

The 8511 is fitted with a 3M™ Cool Flow™ Valve, designed to increase exhalation breathing comfort. The 3M™ Cool Flow™ Valve helps direct exhaled air downward and allows for easy breathing. When you work in physically demanding environments, a little more exhalation breathing comfort can help make a difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 3M 8511 N95 respirator a good choice for construction, woodworking, sanding, and grinding dust?

Yes. The 3M 8511 is a NIOSH-approved N95 disposable respirator that filters at least 95% of airborne non-oil-based particles such as wood dust, sanding and grinding dust, drywall, concrete, and mineral dust. It adds a 3M Cool Flow exhalation valve to release heat and moisture, an adjustable M-noseclip for a secure custom seal, and braided, stretchable woven headbands for comfort during long shifts. It is designed for industrial/occupational use across construction, woodworking, metalworking, foundry operations, agriculture, and general manufacturing.

What does the N95 rating on the 3M 8511 respirator mean?

The 3M 8511 is a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator, meaning it filters at least 95% of airborne particles that do not contain oil. The "N" means non-oil-resistant and "95" means a minimum 95% filtration efficiency against solid and liquid (non-oil) aerosols. It is a standard-size, cup-style disposable respirator that uses 3M advanced electret (electrostatically charged) filter media designed for easier breathing.

What is the 3M Cool Flow valve on the 8511 respirator and how does it work?

The 3M Cool Flow valve is a one-way exhalation valve on the 8511 respirator that opens when you breathe out and closes when you breathe in. It releases warm, moist exhaled breath from inside the mask to reduce heat and moisture buildup, so the respirator breathes cooler and easier during longer or warmer jobs. The valve improves comfort but does not change the N95 filtration rating.

Can the 3M 8511 N95 respirator be used for oil-based mists, spray paint, or chemical vapors?

No. The 3M 8511 is an N95, rated only for non-oil-based particles — it is not approved for oil-based aerosols, and it does not protect against gases, vapors, solvents, or spray-paint fumes. For oil-containing particulates you need an R- or P-series filter, and for organic vapors or acid gases you need a respirator with the appropriate gas/vapor cartridges. The 8511 filters solid and liquid non-oil particulates only.

Does the 3M 8511 protect against mold, tuberculosis, or other airborne biological particles?

It can help reduce exposure. The 3M 8511 is a NIOSH-approved N95 that can help reduce inhalation of certain airborne biological particles such as mold, Bacillus anthracis, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) — which is why it is used in emergency preparedness and stockpiling. However, 3M states it cannot eliminate the risk of contracting infection, illness, or disease. Note that the valved 8511 is not intended for sterile or source-control settings, because the exhalation valve lets unfiltered exhaled air escape.

How do you get a good fit with the 3M 8511, and is it latex-free?

The 3M 8511 has an adjustable M-noseclip that molds over the nose for a secure custom seal, plus braided, stretchable woven headbands and soft inner materials for all-day comfort. It is a standard, one-size cup-style respirator, weighs about 14 grams, and contains no components made from natural rubber latex. As with any tight-fitting respirator, users should be fit-tested and perform a user seal check each time; facial hair prevents a proper seal.

What is the difference between the 3M 8511 and the 3M 8210 respirator?

The main difference is the valve. Both are NIOSH-approved N95 cup-style disposables that filter at least 95% of non-oil particles, but the 3M 8511 adds the 3M Cool Flow exhalation valve, which releases heat and moisture so it breathes cooler and easier — ideal for hot, humid, or long-wear jobs. The 8210 has no valve. Choose the valved 8511 for comfort in warm conditions; note that valved respirators are not used for source control in sterile or medical settings.

How long can you wear the 3M 8511, and is it reusable?

The 3M 8511 is a disposable, single-use respirator — it is not washable or reusable. It is maintenance-free and should be discarded and replaced when it becomes damaged or deformed, when breathing becomes difficult, or when it is contaminated, following your facility's respiratory-protection program. Stored properly in its packaging, it has a 5-year shelf life from the date of manufacture.

Where can you buy the 3M 8511 N95, and does it come in bulk?

The 3M 8511 is available at Industrial Safety Products (industrialsafetyproducts.com) in a box of 10 respirators or a case of 80, with free shipping. Because it is a NIOSH-approved N95, all sales are final and returns are not accepted. It ships in white, standard cup size, for industrial and occupational use.
